Mission to Mars!

Greetings,

If you are receiving this letter, it means that you have been selected to travel to Mars in our new Mission to Mars program. Congratulations. You have overcome a great ordeal being accepted into this program, but now comes the real hard part...you need to find a way to survive in a place where it has been proven that no man, human or otherwise can exist. Before your mission you must think of all the lessons you've learned here on Earth. Think of all the essentials that you need to survive here on Earth, but do not be misguided by things you dont truly need. Space and supplies are limited so consider exactly what you will need and nothing else. Please dont bring your cellphones as I'm sure you wont have cellphone service on Mars. Also, factor in the need for oxygen, although we can supply a limited amount of oxygen for you for periods at a time, if you can think of nay way to access more oxygen easily, please do not hesitate to let us know. Now, go prepare for your trip. The shuttle will depart at 01800 on Friday, July 24, 2009. Good luck and God speed.

Sincerely,
Melissa Dorvily

Although commonly known as Turtle Grass, the scientific name for the sea grass is actually Thalassia testudinum. It is found in the Plantae kingdom and the Tracheophyta phylum.
Seven species of sea grass including this one occur in Florida, turtle grass being the dominant sea grass in Southeast Florida as well as the Florida gulf coast. It is also the most common sea grass throughout the Caribbean. Turtle grass is located from just north of Sebastian Inlet, Florida south to the Gulf of Mexico, Bermuda, the West Indies, Central America, and Venezuela.
The grass blades are flat and ribbon-like, growing to about 14 inches long and 1/2 inch wide.
It is typically found from the low tide level to depths of approximately 30 feet on sand and rubble covered bottoms, and grows in extensive meadows throughout its range. It is given the name sea grass because of the green sea turtles that graze on large field of this particular grass.

Top 3 Science Fair Topics:
1. Playing Music:
Investigating how scales, pitch, rhythm, frequency, interval and ratio in music include mathematical elements.

I would do this science experiment because:
  • Math is my favorite subject area in school.
  • I enjoy music as an area of interest. I play instruments and I rad music and I always wondered on what scale the rules of music were based on mathematically.
This project would be good in areas of interest as well as knowledge that can be put to use.

2. The effects of Card Counting in a Simple Card Game:
Using probability as a strategy to win simple card games.

I would do this experiment because:
  • Again, it involves Math as a key component in the experiment and I LOVE Math.
  • I tend to sit at the computer or at home with family and friends and try to win card games, which I'm fairly good at but at times I tend to lose games that look so easy and I sit and wonder why. I always knew Math was a factor and this experiment gives me a chance to explore that.
3. Can Adults pass a Middle School Science Test?:
Using scientific knowledge, create a test with the the basic components of science as learned in middle school. Students should also take the test to differentiate between the scores.

I would do this experiment because:
  • It tests educational, political, and ethnic backgrounds of the adults because they may have learned the scientific principles differently than we did as a younger generation.
  • Its tests the theory of what compromises scientific knowledge.
